No lie, and the players become more protective of their pets than their characters. I have players who would rather I kill their character than mess with the pet.

In addition to be protective of their pets, players also want cute outfits for them.

In a game I ran for my co-workers, we had chickens with top hats, donkeys with fedoras, and all sorts of other gear for the pets.

Pets can also be a pain. Especially if your game system has spells that use creature count. I was in a 2nd Ed AD&D game when it was still the current version and almost everyone had a pet or familiar or companion. Teleport spells counted each one as a creature against the spell limit of transport capacity. We already had a large party of characters and the pet load almost tripled the transport costs. We had to do planning before teleports to make sure the wizards prepared enough for the planned hop.

Pets and such also used to be very vulnerable to death. Targeting a wizard's familiar instead of the wizard used to be a good tactic. AOE spells can also be hard on pets. In a different game, our party was black listed by the Horse Union due to the massive death toll of any horses our party bought. Death by bulette. Death by dragon breath. Death by enemy fireball. Etc.

If your party wants pets, make sure they don't become an easy target for enemies or wandering monsters. Polly the Parrot can make a nice snack for the random wild falcon. Those fuzzy bunnies in the HQ make wonderful large snake food. "You want to see Max the Dog again? Then deliver 1000 gold to the following...."

Good: Ferret in trench coat pocket.

Better: Ferret in a trench coat.
