Default GCA and Windows 8

I downloaded the Windows 8 developer preview and put it into VirtualBox and after a long bout of trial and error managed to get it running. One of the first things I installed was GCA which I can verify as working for now in "Desktop Mode." This doesn't mean it'll work on the final release but as of the Sept. 16, 2011 Windows Developer Preview it is working.

Out of curiosity, what exactly is "Desktop Mode?" Is it going to be a standard feature or will it be a premium feature for Premium/Professional versions of Windows 8?

The standard Windows UI—mostly the one you're using now in Win7. Win8 is also going to ship with the more touch-centric Metro UI, heretofore seen only in Window Phone 7.

Standard.

Metro is going to be the new "Standard" interface with a derivative of the current UI for what will likely become "legacy" programs. Whether they'll really be a depreciated "legacy" UI or simply its own separate thing is yet to be seen and we probably won't know for years.

It's the 'big gamble' for two reason they're betting people want the mobile touch interface when they're doing desktop work. The second reason Window mobile isn't excetly considered a 'successful' in usability in the Mobile market either.

I meant standard in the "usual/same old" sense. They may make Metro the new default UI, but the old Desktop UI isn't any less standard.

The current Desktop UI isn't going anywhere, certainly not in Win8—and likely never, but that remains to be seen. Metro doesn't map well to various usage cases, where the standard/old Desktop makes far more sense. They also have yet to make Metro the full functional equivalent of Desktop, there are still several areas in Metro where you'll get summarily dumped into Desktop because Metro completely lacks a particular bit of functionality—that may just be a result of this only being a preview, however, but I'm more inclined to think that Microsoft is simply planning on picking the low hanging fruit with Metro in Win8 and leaving the rest for Win9 or never.

Thus continuing the trend of alternating Windows releases being weird concept shifts or just generally experimental... and often flopping (Hello Vista, have you met Bob? Bob, meet Vista).

I'm interested to see how Windows 8 goes, but right now my arm hurts just thinking about having to use a touch screen all day. I hear the "touch" interface workflow is all right with a mouse, but I have a 5 button mouse at work and I think 10 buttons on my mouse at home. I really don't think they had people like me in mind with this UI shift. :P

Win3.11? Acceptable
Win95? Crap
Win98? Acceptable
WinME? Crap
WinXP? Acceptable
WinVista? Crap
Win7? Acceptable
Win8? ?

Fill the progression xD

Now, I followed the standard user path. I didn't put NT, 2k, 2k3, etc in there, because standard users were not supposed to go to these versions for home computers. Microsoft Bob, I never saw, outside of the internet.

MS Bob was sold in the stores here. Or at least they tried to sell it. It didn't really work. :)

Office Assistant was based on Bob. Some ideas just don't work.
