I think the first huge challenge to the League of Nations hits in the previous decade, with the re-energization of Japanese ambitions in Manchuria. If the League is still standing up as a serious obstacle of Fascism in 1935, something really pretty drastic has to have changed in East Asia and the early years of the Showa era.

Edit: though I suppose that can be spun into part of the fun. Maybe the Great Powers actually think of Japan as having a legitimate place at the table for some reason and don't actually mind if it wants to colonize China, which is going to be a big deal eventually might not be*yet*, leaving the European political landscape recognizable. Alternately having Japan adopt its ideals and become a big League supporter (and hence a lot of the League forces and commanding officers be Japanese) could make for a nice bit of weirdness too.

This is all a reach! But it looks plausible enough if you don't look at it too closely.

If the League gives Japan all German Pacific possessions as its mandate so it get the German part of New Guinea and a modified version of the racial equality clause they wanted that might stabilize the government a bit and the militaristic faction might not take power or at least be slower to do so.

Given that Italy and Japan were mainly interested in imperial expansion during the treaty resolution, that probably means a less Idealistic League with a touch more hypocrisy: Imperialism must be approved by the victorious powers...

The only way Japan is happy in the end is if they have a chineese civil war fall into their lap that lets them install a puppet ruler, or better yet, puppet rulers.

As I said, certain issues were baked in. Wilson got a chance to make things better, but he never had a chance to make things good.

Challenge Seed:

History is much like Homeline's, diverging only some time (any time) after 1400 CE. Present-day 2000 CE is noted by Eurasia being a morass of puppet states largely controlled by powerful American states, mostly descended from native tribes and alliances. The only region not involved in the entangled chaos of alliances, dominance, and trade are the largely self-sufficient nations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Eh... Earth axis's causing devastation in the Eurasia, while the American states respond to the climatic shift energetically. Knock on effects hydrate the Sub-Sahara and wipe out malaria, making the successors to Mansa Musa very powerful indeed. The recently industrialized Algonquin Federation and its peer competitors seek to dominate Eurasia through divide and conquer tactics.

I mean, assuming you don't want more brazen space bats.

Hm. I think you can do something with Americapox and a different Columbian exchange, but I have to ponder it a bit more.
