Permeation with sand won't even do much for you in most deserts; while there are areas with seas of sand, an awful lot of deserts are rock, or are puddles of sand separated by rock.

Yeah, I grew up in a "desert". There are lots of different kinds. And yet everyone immediately jumps to the sea of sand. If you want a earth-crossing meld, you're probably stuck with "sediment", or even "earth", meaning dirt, sand, stone, and so forth. "Water" can be interesting though.
