I was recommending a spreadsheet.

My bad. I need to read closer.

If nothing else, SJG doesn't publish a spreadsheet. Maybe Flyndaran isn't adept at creating spreadsheets? I use them somewhat frequently, and I am no ace with spreadsheets. I would feel more confident (of rules compliance) using GVB than my own spreadsheet, even though it is certainly a reasonable route to take. If there were no GVB, I'd use a spreadsheet instead.

Personally, I bought GVB, tried to use it once and went back to Excel.

Well, that's what I thought his situation was (I was assuming it failed to run in Compatibility Mode, based on the OP).

Oh sure, and in that case, spreadsheets work well for this kind of thing.

If I were to be truly honest with myself the reasons I haven't used spreadsheets is that I'm lazy, and a bit fearful of trying something new.

How are spreadsheets better than the official Vehicle program?

I use speadsheets because I'm lazy.

Spreadsheets allow you to handle things -- especially performance formulas - in non-standard wars. For example, VE2 will not correctly give performance numbers for autogyros but a user can't "fix" the top speed and stall formulas for them in the official program, but he can in a spreadsheet. Also, the program didn't handle component armor correctly in the earlier versions and I don't know if it was ever fixed.

I'm the one who's fearful. I still do all my designs by hand, although I tabulate the data in a Word program. I keep thinking I should pony up for the GVB, but I'm onto Win 7, too. Does the GVB only work in Compatibility Mode?

Or, perhaps I should learn to use a spreadsheet.

Ok, I'm looking at how to use a spreadsheet for Excel and playing with Open Office.
My, it's much easier than I had feared.
Now I feel silly for avoiding it for so long.

As long as you don't try to get the spreadsheet to do too much, it should be easy to create and use.

If you are building a lot of similar vehicles (eg, TL8, wheeled, civilian), you only have to make little tweaks for each new vehicle. You can then use that sheet as the basis for TL8 wheeled military vehicles, then TL8 tracked military vehicles, etc. OTOH, something like a battlesuit will require a very different sheet, but that's okay, because you can use it for other battleuits and, with a few changes, for mecha.
