So, I guess we seem to be leaning toward a "free trader" kind of game?

Great! I hope we're ALL up for it. :-)

As far as the topic is concerend, free trading should be quite suited to the PbP format. On the other hand, I am not particularily interested in a game consisting of purely game mechanical/economical decisions or keeping track of cargo, prices and so on.
Native languages and time zones are not an issue, I hope. You can log-in and state your actions/intentions whenever it is convenient during the day for you. That's the great thing about play-by-post -- we do not all need to be here at the same time. Language might be a bit of a difficulty, but you seem to have a workable knowledge of english, so I think we can overcome any difficulty there. Just let me know if I need to explain something differently and I'll do my best to work with you. I agree that a Trading game should lend itself to PbP quite well. But I'll try to keep things more interesting than a shopping trip.

Well, maybe, at least to start. Of course, there's no reason why we couldn't change the focus of the game once we start if we want to do so.

Let me ask some questions of everyone to get some more information about the kind of game that we want this to be: There would hopefully be some ongoing conflict going on in the region where the PCs are trading to add an element of danger and uncertainty to everything that you do. Who should the conflict be against? It could be an ongoing conflict between the Imperium and the Zhodani Consulate, or it could be skirmishes with a faction in the Vargr Extents, or it could be a purely internal conflict between portions of the Imperium. The PCs could be conducting peaceful trade among the warring worlds, or they could be trading in military goods and supplies.

I guess an even more basic question is: What race/species do the PCs want their characters to be? Will you be all or mostly of the same race? And will you be on the side of that race in the conflict, or will you be working for the opposite side? Or maybe you would prefer to be working for a third party race who has no direct interest in the conflict, but rather, you wish to make money by selling to both sides of the conflict. Perhaps selling bullets to one side and guns to the other side?

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts about this, doulos05, sn0wball, and MisterJuan.

I have to admit I need to reread the Traveler soucebook... it's been a few years since I've had a PC roaming around in that universe ;)

Right of the top of my head, I can already state I would probably be creating a Terran PC, racial template wise. Probably some kind of ex Terran Navy officer. That's pretty much as far as my brain takes me right now! I'll probably chip in a little more once I reread the book.

Beside that, I'd be willing to roll with anything story wise.

Okay MisterJuan, that sounds good! Terran, eh? One wonders whether he was an officer in a Terran-based, System or Sector-wide navy, or the Imperial Navy, and, for that matter, what his attitude is toward Imperial-types in general, not to mention more 'alien' aliens!

Well, all that will actually somewhat depend on "when" exactly the game will take place. I wouldn't mind playing a character who's rather overtly biased towards non-terrans. I like characters who have somewhat big character flaws, as it makes them a bit more real (in my opinion at least) and gives a nice character arc to work with.

Would you be open to having said character have a rather well known reputation? And I don't really mean as a war hero... more like the infamous kind (which could explain the "ex-navy" part). Somehow, I wouldn't mind a few "Hey, aren't you the one they call The Butcher of XYZ?"

Anyways... I'm just throwing ideas around.

I live in Seoul, South Korea. I'm pretty confident we can count on one hand the number of people besides me in this timezone.

As for the record-keeping portion... Pup, if you're interested, I'm a bit of an amateur programmer and I'm hacking together a program that will generate lists of cargo between two planets. It probably wouldn't be hard to make it 'select' the cargo and put it in our 'cargo hold.' In that case, I don't mind running the 'party face'/ businessman character, giving me a good reason for being the one who knows (alternately, if nobody wants the captain slot, I can run that one instead/too since the captain ought to know what's on his ship).

As for character, I'm up for any era, any race (though I'll probably run one of the Humanati). Once I know what berth I'll be filling on the ship, I'll roll up a character.

So, if we're thinking free trader, let me just clarify what we're thinking as far as era and ruleset so I can start building a character.

Ruleset: 4E or 3E?
Era: ISW, Rule of Man, pre- or post-Long Night?
Location: Definitely someplace with lots of conflict, I'm down for that.

Really, all my Traveller experience is with the post-Long Night period. But, having said that, I'm totally open to anything, although I must warn everyone that my knowledge of Traveller canon is somewhat lacking and I have been known to just make stuff up on the spur of the moment. So, if necessary, maybe somebody could give me a lesson on the period we choose beforethe game starts? Question: Is the ISW period the time that immediately preceded the Rule of Man, immediately followed the Rule of Man, or something else entirely?

(Never mind, let's just go with Post-Long Night!)

Very interesting ideas, too! So for your Reputation Disad, how were you wanting to play it? How large would the class of people be whose reaction toward you is negatively affected?

I don't know about the cargo program. I usually just make something up, and it's worked so far. But thanks.

About your character, were you guys thinking that Captain = Pilot, or will the Pilot be just another officer?

Let's move this discussion to This Thread. I've copied the above long post over to there, so we can pick up the discussion right where we left off.
