Why?

Actually, I'm inclined to think it's best to choose one or the other (or bit of each) depending on character concept (as an agreement between player and GM).

Then you'd probably like Alternating Alternatives and Talent Perks.

The Talent Perks is the other option I'm considering. So far. I may change my mind again.

Yeah, that's a nice option. Still, I'd pick between perks and alternate benefits depending on concept.
