Another thought, if he is posing as a young male, no one would think twice about a young male modding his scooter with a big bore kit, performance exhaust and other ways to make it fly

That sounds nice.

Of course, the scooter he used would have been carefully chosen to appear reasonably cheap and beat-up, but modding it for better performance sounds like a good idea.

I think he'd keep his surveillance gear and any longer range radio than the tiny covert one he wears in a bag stowed in the trunk. That's also where the mini-BOB fits, the one with a small automatic firearm to lay down a second or two of suppressive fire as he bails from an ambush.

The player has chosen a Glock 18c pistol for that role. He'll carry a Beretta Nano pocket pistol hidden in a pair of breakaway pocket CCW jeans, for protection, but the Glock is if he ever has to shoot his way out of an ambush.

As it turned out, he didn't need to do so on those intelligence ops, but he might need to use the Glock on the actual adventure.

I still don't know well enough what kind of surveillance gear fits in a small bag, but might provide a real performance boost for an operation by local Ministry of Interior Rapid Reaction Brigade.

Cell phone surveillance sounds really good and a small laser mike and a small shotgun mike would both be awesome, if practical.

I don't know how much better top-of-the-line in those areas is in 2011 than it was in 2007, however. Does anything exist in the real world that is better than the generic stats in High-Tech?

Modifying cheap and beat up vehicles to fly is a popular past time of young men. The Honda Reflex is another common scooter that aims to appeal to the young crowd through stylish quasi sports bike styling and has roomy under seat stowage, a decent sized glovebox and can easily be fitted with top case and saddlebags.

One fun mod is to add a cruise control to your scooter, that way can use your right hand for other stuff at times. It also is just plain cool and awesome and perfectly valid even for people who don't want to use scooter to nefarious ends.

Ideally, I want him to fit into the background. I also want him to look as non-threathening as any Iraqi Military Age Male (MAM) can look, to militias of whatever stripe. Part of that will be wearing clothing that looks like they wouldn't provide scope to hide any weapons or explosives, like tight jeans and a t-shirt.

I want any Shi'te militia members, potential Sunni insurgents and any other combatants belonging to politically or religiously motivated movements to take one look at him before deciding that it doesn't matter who he is, he's clearly neither armed nor concealing any kind of explosive device on himself.

Even the scooter, while it would be nice to have some cargo space, has got to look like you couldn't really hide anything in or on it. Anything suspicious is a potential IED, anyway.

I'm thinking he could afford a tiny concealed space with less than half a cubic feet of storage.

Cruise control sounds awesome.

Most scooters come with built in storage compartments, it is part of their appeal. Also often have lots of plastics with open space under them could potentially smuggle with

If you want a very popular scooter without built in storage the Honda Ruckus is an option, though a 49cc one. Also has a rugged manly appearance and better off road characteristics compared to many scooters

Note the cargo space is a big draw, so having cargo space might help blend in, like a 2 wheeled station. Being able to carry groceries is nice.

What kind of scooter looks dinky and slow, but can be modified in inobvious ways to perform well when bugging-out?

Having an open cargo space which he isn't using will make him seem even less threathening. A tiny hidden compartment will serve to hide the surveillance gear and mini-BOB.

Can a scooter be upgraded with a nitrous boost system for extra emergency performance?

I haven't looked closely into the matter, but my impression is that the mechanics given in GURPS Vehicles, where any such use of a nitrous boost bottle has a probability of fouling up the engine, is bad, and that the real problem is that such a boost creates huge wear and tear on the various car parts, the engine block or the gear system, so that stuff engineered for several hundred thousand kilometers of driving before replacement suddenly needs replacement after a few hundred kilometers. And for a car, a new engine and a new gear box is something like close to half the cost of the entire car right there.

Your smallest and least powerful scooters (and also cheapest and most fuel efficient) are the 50cc class, which you probably want one of to meet the dinky and slow requirement

Well, the most commonly seen and commonly despised scooters in the US (and I alas know nothing about Scooters in Iraq) are the Chinese ones of unknown random brands

For a dinky scooter, the Yamaha Zuma is a small 50cc scooter that can be pretty vigorous and is popular for upgrading. It also has a kickstarter, and one of the upgrades is to take the battery out, since scooter batteries add weight (and small scooter batteries, especially when used for short around town hops like scooters often are, are notoriously problematic)

The engine is two stroke and air cooled, which is good for scooters. Big bore kits and other upgrades are available.

So, take your Yamaha Zuma, add a big bore kit, replace the plastics with ratty plastics from some Chinese off brand, break off a mirror, and throw a milk crate on the back and you have a thoroughly not worth stealing looking scooter that can get up and go . . . for a scooter

The stock Zuma actually has pretty spiffy off the line acceleration, can beat by Reflex there

Whoa! Passionate deities! THIS is what you need! Yamaha Zuma with a 400cc engine from a Suzuki Burgman!

http://totalruckus.com/phpBB3/viewto...?f=159&t=43688

It can fly! I want one!

Get the team Techie to build one of these unholy monstrosities and give it ratty off brand plastics, and you have the ultimate sleeper scooter and Delta Force emergency vehicle

Default Binoculars

What kind of compact binoculars exist at late TL8, at the end of 2011?

If the goal is Holdout -1, no more than 0.5 lbs. and good image quality and decent light amplification along with at least x8 magnification, what models are there?

Do any premium or military models exist in that size range that also have good night vision capabilities?

Are there Holdout 0 versions that are even smaller, but still have viable surveillance applications?

What's a good 'no-bells-and-whistles- brand of compact binoculars that doesn't cost more than $500 and still has no more than Holdout -1, while also being decent for surveillance?*

*This one is meant more for the veteran no-nonsense cop among the PCs, who'll prefer a Japanese, Korean or Chinese brand to ridiculously pricey Swiss optics and doesn't want any fancy complex digital technology.

Default Microphones

Now, the Supercardioid Mini Shotgun Microphone is sold by Spymall and costs a whopping $150. It is therefore most likely about as useful for actual surveillance as a third nipple.

Is there, however, some actual quality surveillance gear available in that size range or at the very least able to be stowed in some configuration that is not worse than Holdout -1? It can cost up to $5,000 and a good Holdout modifier is more important than extreme range, but it must still be useful for surveillance at ranges up to 30 yards (ideally 100 yards or even more, if possible).

The shotgun mike in GURPS High-Tech is too large and I don't know if any Pyramid article has covered bleeding-edge surveillance technology available today...
