My AD&D books got covered with clear "Contact" brand adhesive shelf paper. A rather permanent book cover. But protective from liquid and pizza spillage during many sunset to sunrise gaming sessions during college. Both the books and protective covers are in decent shape today. I also did a fair number of paper sack K-12 textbook covers. Plus some that were more colorful.
The Contact stuff also works on softback books. Many of my GURPS Traveller books received such covers. |

In school they made us put covers on our books. I hated doing it, but I suppose it really protected them from getting abused in our lockers and backpacks. Never ever thought about doing a book cover for anything else.

Stickers-on-laptops and -travel-mugs may be this century's equivalent mode of self expression, if my wife's behavior is at all indicative.
Cell phone covers may also serve a similar purpose, especially if there is room for credit cards, emergency folding currency, etc. |

I still have a couple copies of my GURPS 3E Basic sets in their original Dragonskins covers from Chessex. :)

I've forgotten how to make book covers out of paper bags.

Transparent sticky-back plastic for paperback textbooks and some early RPG softcovers. When my softback AD&D PHB disintegrated, I decided hardcovers were worth the money.

Back in high school, circa 1977 - 1980, I recall making book covers for my Tunnels & Trolls, Metamorphosis Alpha, and D&D books.
Partly to protect the books, but mostly to hide what they were! Oh, gawd, to have to explain what I was reading was terrifying. It wasn't a "tough" school, but still, the concept of RPGs was pretty out there at the time. (I eventually did manage to get some folks to play Melee during study hall!)

I don’t recall putting covers on my RPG books, but I definitely illustrated the covers we were required to put on our textbooks such that they resembled the AD&D Players’ Handbook and Monster Manual.
