One of the parents in our Scout troop is a ham radio operator. He's got a lower-energy solar powered kit that gets dragged along on some campouts, and the local ham operator group has got a server where they run a shortwave repeater over the internet so all the members can listen in on whoever's sharing a broadcast at any given time.
