[GAME] After the End, Worldbuilding
This is a collaborative setting construction forum game. The objective is to combine our shared talents to build an AtE setting that is yet to rebuild in any meaningful manner. This a setting where a fist full of dollars game would fit, a small group can cause lasting effects.
This is an earth based setting. The method is to answer a posted question about the setting, then post a question of your own. Build bit-by-bit on what the other posters have written, and try not to contradict anything that's been established. Questions can be anything from the very general to extremely specific, complex or simple, and can follow on from what's gone before or start off a new direction. Rapid Fire Rule- 1d6 Sentence Limit:*For this iteration of the game, we'll be trying a new rule with the aim of getting short, quick answers with each post. For each question you pose, roll 1d6 and state the result. This will be the sentence limit for the answer to that question, though the answer may be shorter. ----- To make it easier to read through, clearly mark questions and answers in bold, and quote the question you're answering, in the below format. Example of post format: Question 42 What's the name of the pit master? (1d6: 2 sentences) Answer 42 The pit master is known only as Gorge. He is freakishly large and immensely strong.* ----- Question 1 What TL did mankind reach before the end? A TL lower than late 8 or early 9 would seem to indicate an alternate history. (1D6 roll of 3)

Mature TL 9, though there were certain TL 10 technologies that were into development and some that had matured. For instance humanity had colonized outside the Earth's biosphere and had 'uplift' a handful of other species. Other advances were coming from research into artifacts within the solar system. Question 2 Was the end swift, or a gradual decline? 1d6 roll: 4 |

It was a three staged affair. First there were the years of forest and grass fires, followed by flooding rains and mud slides, and a coastal battering of storm and tidal surges. Then the war, started some say by rogue AI(s), resulting in the poorly maintained infrastructure (power, water, data, transport etc) just falling apart. After that, apparently Greenland melted, and as a consequence, the world got slightly smaller, crowded, and very very hungry. Question 3 What was it like, before the war? 1d6 roll: 4

Re: [GAME] After the End, Worldbuilding
Global climate change had continued unabated for most of the 21st Century and, while the need to "do something" had finally become undeniable by the 2050s, by then some of the worst effects were irreversible.
The most advanced nations had developed fusion power by the 2040s and begun to replace fossil fuel power as quickly as their economies could tolerate; quantum computing appeared and began to spread widely; and space industry (mostly based on Luna) had created new materials and medicines. However, at the same time, rising seas and desertification impacted some of the poorest nations in the world, and the number of refugees in the most advanced nations rose to the tens of millions -- largely living on public assistance. By the end of the 21st Century, the question quickly became, "Would the economies of the most advanced nations use the technological breakthroughs to expand their economies rapidly enough to keep pace with the costs of climate collapse?" Question 4: What was one event that signaled the approach of an unavoidable collapse? 1d6 roll: 1 sentence (Hint: roll the dice, first, and then ask a question that can be reasonably answered in that number of sentences....)

Answer 4: The United States accelerated its production and use of carbon fuels for power generation in a futile attempt to preserve dying industries, like coal and natural gas; which was seen by developing nations around the world, like China and India, as tacit approval to do the same.
Question 5: What social institutions survived The End? (1d6 roll = 5)

Re: [GAME] After the End, Worldbuilding
Okay, now we have a contradiction we must address.
I wrote, "The most advanced nations had developed fusion power by the 2040s and begun to replace fossil fuel power as quickly as their economies could tolerate...". Humabout wrote, "The United States accelerated its production and use of carbon fuels for power generation...". Moreover, evileeyore's first response read, "Mature TL 9, though there were certain TL 10 technologies that were into development and some that had matured." So, assuming the United States qualifies as a a "most advanced nation," and widespread deuterium-hydrogen fusion power is a hallmark of TL9 (G: Basic Set, p512), then it's problematic to assume accelerated construction of fossil-fuel plants. How do we reconcile?

The fossil industry get huge subsidies from the state because politically important jobs are at stake.

Re: [GAME] After the End, Worldbuilding
The simplest way to sort out a conflict in this type of game is to turn the issue into a question, so.
Question 6 How do we reconcile increased fossil fuel use with increased fusion power generation? Post 6, above has the issue written up. Roll of 5, up to 5 sentences. Question 5:What social institutions survived The End? (1d6 roll = 5)

Re: [GAME] After the End, Worldbuilding
Answer 5:*What social institutions survived The End? (1d6 roll = 5)
There are countless people and groups who claim the name of a pre-end organisation, some do it for the advantage it can provide while others started as former members. In most cases the codes and beliefs are given lip service at best, typically any larger armed force are just raiders regardless of what uniforms they might wear. There are exceptions, MSF (Doctors without borders) still helps people in some form or another if campfire rumour is to be believed. Several ecologically motivated groups exist as well, although some have devolved to the point where they blindly follow the ideology of trees being good and technology bad. Question 7 With the assorted improvements in technology and obviousness of the impending end. How well prepared were those who planned for the end? Roll of 5 sentences.
