I'm not sure how The Authority fits in the genre (I'd consider it Iron-Age deconstructionist superheroes, myself). They weren't secret and didn't hunt secret monsters. They were a massively public superhero team that eventually fought God. Planetary is probably closer if you want an Ellis title.

To clarify. I can think of genetically modified characters in other genres. I'm looking for a Monster Hunters source.

How about Frankenstein? :-)

What do you mean here? Can I attach more than one template to a single body of work? Or is there a template that I think has only one possible source?

I certainly can attach more than one of them to most of the presumed inspirations for Monster Hunters. I can think of multiple sources for all them except the genetically modified one (prior to PRK's explanation, of course).

Wouldn't he be a Techie (or whatever the science/technology template is called)? Or are you referring to some pastiche version in which he modified himself?

Last time I checked, Frankenstein created monsters -- he didn't hunt them. :)

How about the Jägermonsters in Girl Genius? They are plausible alphabetically. I even like the pun.
  1. Commando?
  2. Exorcist?
  3. Jägermonster?
  4. Monster.
  5. Psi.
  6. Sage.
  7. Sneaker? Spy?
  8. Techie.
  9. Warrior.
  10. Witch?

What about the second half of the novel?

Sorry, I failed at being clear by being too brief.

I meant this: The X-Files has Sculley and Mulder, who are #7s, I think, and the Lone Gunmen, who are #8s, so that's two templates. Can you think of source material with characters that fall into four, five, or six templates? More?

Yeah, but hardly anyone remembers that Frankenstein was the doctor and that the monster wasn't. Saw a movie where he was called Victor.

Oh, it honestly never occurred to me to just look at one genre.

The monster was technically his son so it makes sense to say that the monster would also have the last name Frankenstein.

/rationalization

Sure

Marvel's Nightstalkers and Blade comics have had 1's, 2's, 4's, 6's, 8's and 10's at least. Blade himself is a 4 with a 9 lens.

Harry Dresden is a 10, so is Molly Carpenter (and the rest of the White Council), Thomas Raith, Susan Rodriguez and the Alphas are 4s, Michael Carpenter (along with the other Knights of the True Cross) is a 2 (possibly with a 9 lens), Karin Murphy is a 7 with a 1 lens, Kinkaid is a 1 (possibly with a 3 or a 4 lens), Bob is a 6.

Hellboy, Abe and Roger are 4s, Liz Sherman is a 5, Dr. Corrigan is a 6, Cpt. Daimio is probably a 3 (I guess, maybe a 4), Johann is probably a 4 with a 5 lens (unless you are allowed to be completely made of ectoplasm as a 5).
