Default List of magic weapon enchantments

We do have a specific list of three different enchantments that render a mundane item into a "magic weapon" on page ITL 42.

The one and only way to get "immunity to break weapon" in this game is to cast the Staff II (or higher) spell.

If you believe that you have found another way to do this then please point me to the page number that lists the costs, ST and time required to cast "immunity to break weapon". Thanks.

Two ways:
1. As GM, I decide that a particular weapon is immune to the Break Weapon spell. No additional rules ore mechanics needed.
2. The rules for a PC enchanting a weapon to make it unbreakable are on ITL 163 under "Researching New Magic Items." All of the details for the spell need to be worked out between the player and the GM.

Wat! Immunity to break weapon USED to be a standard thing!! Its gone?

is there maybe "Immune to thrown spells" or "Spell Shield"?

admittedly they wont help if you roll 18 ..

Do 'fine' weapons still only break 1/6 in such cases?

It is specially mentioned in several places. The only problem is that the cost to do it is missing. My house rules cover this issue of course.

Spell Shield costs "Aye" each turn. Self powered is $60k

Very fine. Fine breaks half the time.

What Shostak wrote:

There is already a Break Weapon spell and a Drop Weapon enchantment which can be used to make Immunity to Drop Weapon for the listed price.

The only thing missing is a Break Weapon enchantment for the basis for a Break Weapon immunity. (The reason seems to me to be that there is no "break weapon" item, as the non-immunity version would be annoyingly powerful.)

We solved this back circa 1982 by using the "researching new magic items" guidelines, also as Shostak wrote. We came up with a version which only works for immunity, base cost $1500, 2 weeks to make, 100 ST/day, $130 ingredients/week.

I dunno .. a sword that could break (non-magical) weapons sounds pretty cool actually :)

Id assume such a sword maybe you had to roll to hit your opponents weapon ..

OP you figure?

Can Fencers attempt to disarm someone these days? or only by chopping em on the arm

Well, a Break Weapon item would need some mechanic and an appropriate cost. The Drop Weapon item already requires you to use an arrow or similar, so you can't just put it on a mace and have everyone you hit drop their weapon too.

If you could do that, and also break their weapon, sure it "would be cool" in the sense of something very powerful, and that might or might not be something a GM wants in their campaign, but it would be one of the most powerful things in the game (put it on a two-handed weapon, hand it to someone who can pull off sweeping blows). Think about it. If that existed, and weren't extremely expensive, it would be very desirable and so become somewhat common, and you'd get a weird arms race of people wanting immunity from it and/or bringing lots of extra weapons to battle, etc...

If such abilities were included they should have appropriately high requirements to create, or else they'd be unbalanced in that sense. But just being immune to breaking is not nearly that spectacular, so it wants a reduced effort listing just for the purpose of enchanting Immunity.

I infer that 1980's Steve either overlooked/dismissed the "need" to list a Break Weapon enchantment, and/or thought about the situation I mentioned above, and found it messy and so just left Break Weapon off the table, leaving it for GM's to decide what to do about it, since many GM's would/did not notice, not care, or just make a ruling.

(Oh, and yes, Master Fencers in new ITL can disarm, but it's like the Quarterstaff disarm, where you have to roll to hit and then the victim can roll 3/DX to not drop it. The Drop/Break Weapon spells don't give a saving throw.)

I was just thinking a 'break weapon' weapon would really fit an Elric type campaign

and the fencer disarming thing .. very 3 musketeers, we'd done something similar in home rules .. glad theres an official one
