Default Attempt to draw the other guy's dagger

Can you pickpocket in HTH?

Good question! I wouldn't apply the pickpocket talent, but it feels like something you could handle with a contested DX roll.

Surely you'd be a bit busy for pickpocketing?

It's really common in fiction to cut somebody's throat with their own knife.

This.

My experience in HTH training (which is quite a bit less hectic, I imagine than the real thing), plus in conversations with Vietnam vets who really WERE involved in HTH combat -- with knives -- and lived to come home and tell us about it, is that generally folks are preoccupied with staying alive, not really "adding insult to injury" by using the victim's own knife against them...

I think the issue here might be more for an unarmed guy desperately looking for a way to fend off an attacker they are grappling with .. then a player might think 'whats this bugger got on his belt I can use'. a simple 3/DX roll simulates if its easy to reach any dagger (or pistol, brass knuckles, other HTH appropriate thing) the enemy might have .. maybe also a 3/IQ roll to notice the traditional dagger-down-the-boot secreted weapons. Weapons still break I presume in the new TFT? its also a common trope for a hero to claw a rock from out of the ground to use in desperate situations (maybe 3/IQ to find one, then 3/DX to dig it out while wrestling .. probably adds only +1 to bare hand damage)

The only problem with that is, if the guy he's grappling with ain't using it in HTH, why does he even have it? It just doesn't pass my common sense check. Of course, if a player really is dumb enough to NOT draw his own dagger when engaging in HTH, I suppose it would be possible, but it ought to be harder to do than the enemy would find it. After all, you're coming at it from the wrong angle.

The rules as written provide the answer, I think.

"During the combat phase, HTH combat is rolled for like any other combat. Figures do bare-hands or dagger damage according to their ST, as described below. A figure may attempt to draw a dagger by picking option (u) and making its DX roll on 3 dice."

The rule above does not specify whose dagger your trying to draw. So, one interpretation might be that if a dagger is on one or the other, either could try to draw it when their turn comes. That isn't the only interpretation available though.

Best option, pull your own dagger first.
