[GAME] Synthesise a Cybercity!
[GAME] Synthesise a Cybercity! "A long long time ago, in a city far far away..." "The sky above the port was the splintered rainbow of a phone screen, shattered by a harsh blow…" "There are eighty million tragedies in the cyber city. Yours will be one of them, hotdogger…" "Hell erupted through the pavement and built a city..." This is a collaborative setting construction forum game. The objective is to combine our shared talents to construct a cyberpunk city on a secondary world for a band of cyberpunks to get lost and find trouble in. For the purposes of this thread, 'secondary world' means a fictional world that is divorced from real world history, geopolitics or cultures. Tolkien defined the term for building fantasy worlds, but I'm sure we can borrow the term for cyber-fi as well. This could mean that it's on an alien planet settled from Earth in the distant future, that it's in an alternate universe where humanity's homeworld looks very different to in our reality or a post-post apocalyptic Earth - it doesn't much matter. It means that we are free to make the city's and the world's own unique countries, history, cultures and background without having to draw a thread from our modern day. Consider it the city out of a cyberpunk fairy tale, if you like. We'll focus mainly on the city, but where necessary we can build the larger world that it exists in to make it feel real. The method is to answer a posted question about the setting, then post a question of your own. Build bit-by-bit on what the other posters have written, and try not to contradict anything that's been established. Questions can be anything from the very general to extremely specific, complex or simple, and can follow on from what's gone before or start off a new direction. Tags: To help organise various question streams we'll mark each question with a tag. We'll start with [CTY], for questions about the city itself, and [SET] for questions about the broader setting. Feel free to generate other question tags if you think a separate or more narrow topic requires them. ----- To make it easier to read through, clearly mark questions and answers in bold, and quote the question you're answering, in the below format. Example of post format: Quote:
His real name is Cornelius Ngo, but everyone just calls him Neo for some reason. Question 48 [CTY] What currencies do you need in the city? ----- Here's a list of previous collaborations:
Spoiler:
----- I'll initiate the question sequence in the next post.

Question 1 [CTY]
What is the name of the city? Question 2 [CTY] What interesting geographic feature is the city built on (or in, around, between or under)?

Re: [GAME] Synthesise a Cybercity!
Question 1 [CTY] What is the name of the city?
The megacorp who built the place dubbed it YOU-Topia as a marketing gimmick. Picture yourself in paradise! This gets about as much respect as you might expect in a cyberpunk setting. Question 2 [CTY] What interesting geographic feature is the city built on (or in, around, between or under)? It's an artificial island, fabricated mostly out of plastic harvested from the Pacific Trash Gyre in both a PR move (cleaning up the environment, yo) and because hey, free raw material.. Question 3 [CTY] Where did they put it, and why? |

Answer 3: Youtopia is positioned in the tropics of the coast of a continent sadly lacking in natural tropical islands. Because who doesn't like the tropics? Question 4: How long ago was YOU-topia built? Question 5: How far down is the ocean floor from the surface?

So let's put Qn 2 up for a do-over. ETA: Ok, make that a partial do-over. We've established that it's a seastead made from ocean waste.

Re: [GAME] Synthesise a Cybercity!
YOU-Topia was built 197 years ago, just after the master Wars.
Question 6: Has YOU-Topia seen much change over the past two centuries or has nothing really changed? Question 7: This is a cyberpunk setting, so who owns YOU-topia? Question 8: Where can you go to party at 1 in the morning? |

Re: [GAME] Synthesise a Cybercity!
Question 6: Has YOU-Topia seen much change over the past two centuries or has nothing really changed?
Though it was originally populated by thorughly-vetted sararimen, billed as a reward for loyal service, ten generations later it has the usual mix of all types you might expect (except immigrants, who are still strictly screened and monitored). Question 7: This is a cyberpunk setting, so who owns YOU-topia? 100% of the real estate belongs to its creator, NeuroCorp (a loser of the Master Wars, driven from its home markets), which charges ruinous leases to use it. The only reason anybody pays their asking price is the partially-captive market, as its generations of Question 8: Where can you go to party at 1 in the morning? Where can't you go? YOU-Topia is a city that never sleeps, well-lit at all hours and densely-packed enough that goods and services are available around the clock. There are no shadows for brutal urban horrors to hide in - They happen in the equivalent of broad daylight. Question 1 [SET]: Name and describe one popular hangout. Question 9 [CTY]: What were the Master Wars fought over? Who won, and how? |

The Ocean floor is between 3500 and 4200 meters below the surface where YOU-topia resides. The ocean floor is largely uninteresting except for a trench and a rocky rise. Question 10 Roughly how large is YOU-Topia's surface area? Question 11 What different terrains make up You-topia? (Urban, Ultra high density urban, waste ground, reclaimed surface etc)
