Once on the webcomic "Nordic Brothers" they made the point that the Nodic peoples loved the fact that the American Halloween had gotten to their nations. The main reason they gave was that it stopped the growth of Christmas. Halloween has become an Anti-Christmas to keep Christmas pened up in its seasonal slot.

No one wants "Happy Birthday Dear Jesus" a 1950s Sci Fi story where Christmas parties start in July.

In Japan, also. This is both easy (because we do not celebrate Thanksgiving) and deeply weird (because we do not celebrate Thanksgiving).

So, maybe some parts of Halloween get completely detached from other bits in some parts of the world. A space station where it is entirely about growing pumpkins, for example, as a demonstration of your skill with the hydroponics. Still called Halloween, but no ghosts, no carvings, just pumpkins.

Interesting. My impression is that Halloween in modern day Norway is very similar to Halloween of the 1960s in America. But I admit my "research" on that was very minimal.

I didn't know Black Friday was a thing in Japan! As for Halloween, my understanding is that Halloween didn't really get going there until about the beginning of the 21st century. But as with Norway, my knowledge of that is quite limited.

Are you surprised that Frederick Phol beat you to the punch in 1956? Both Left and Right leaning Sci Fi authors of the 1950s did corporate/advertising dystopias. SPACE MERCHANTS aka GRAVY PLANET is the best known example.

For people who want to look it up I'm assuming that was "Frederik Pohl" (I had to check exact spelling myself). The best chance of finding it might be "The Best of Frederik Pohl" collection.

There are so many "Internet (blank) Database" sites we're going to need an "Internet Internet Database Database" before long.
