I'm rather dubious about very complex systems to model social structures in the context of an RPG.
Of course, but anyway that is happening all the time in many areas. Despite its pretenses, academic scholarship is far of being cold, clean, free of subjectivity, empty of passionate polemics and personal biases. I understand that people more or less specialized in any of the touched areas is prone to be more sensitive and critical about the material.

Per my understanding, the SE book will not be modeling these or those social structures; rather, it develops and enhances the existing tools in the Basic Set for handling social traits like Status, Wealth, Rank (etc) taking the things to a new level of sophistication for you addressing better subjects like the ones discussed in this thread -and of course, there is more.

In other words, it isn't a catalog of social structures, but more akin to a toolkit for defining your own ones.

It will help to address these kind of subjects in finer detail, avoiding current oversimplifications.

We'll see when it comes out. The pretentious title gives me a poor impression- but it may not reflect the quality of the work.

Social engineering is only the working title. It might change before publication. Also, it was one of the most active playtests I've been in, and I've been in several (IIRC it had more emaila than High Tech, while being much shorter)

Extensive playtesting is generally a good thing.

Well, the title already was extensively discussed and pondered by the author and the SJG-GURPS staff long before of the playtest. Anyway in midst of it, several alternate titles were proposed, and it wasn't easy to find one definitely better. Likely we'll need to wait for the actual release to seeing the final choice.

Rising to their defense, eh?

Don't worry. I'll still give it a look.

Pretentious? Really? I see it as a playful joke. A riff off of both the old hacker euphemism and world-building.

I'm not in the playtest.

I know as much as any of us on this forum know about the maesters. You aren't George Martin in disguise, are you? ;)

I have no idea what 'old hacker euphemism' you might mean, SirPudding.
