Default What to do with GURPS 3E basic set?

I saw the prices in amazon of GURPS 3E basic set at $0.5 (+$4 with shipping). Tempting since someone borrowed my 3E and I lost track of who borrowed it.

Still, If I bought it, what would I do with it?

Keep it on hand to help interpret possibly obscure passages in other 3e books you may acquire because there's no 4e equivalent (frex, Middle Ages 1, Goblins, Autoduel). Or wear it as a rather daring hat.

You could:

Replace your worn-out old GURPS 3e basic set.
Start a 3e campaign.
Exult in having got so much RPG for so little outlay.

Send it to me, so I can replace my old worn-out 3e basic set...

Point of reference...

Way back when TFT was the rage (was it ever THE rage?), I had noted that this one store had extra copies of TFT material. I didn't buy the extra books because despite Metagaming going out of business, the group I was running had their own copies of the material and I had mine.

Then the day arose where my copy of ADVANCED WIZARD wore out, and I wished to pick up a spare copy. Horror of horrors - that little shop with spares had sold them all. Now, I don't have a spare copy of Advanced Wizard.

How does this relate to the original poster? If you ever think you might want a spare copy, the time to get it is now. Later on, it may come to happen that you won't be able to find that spare copy again. On the flip side, do out of print copies ever truly fade away for good when you have access to EBAY?

Me? I'd suggest buying the spare copy now if the price is acceptable to you.

An alarming number of items in my game collection are things that I couldn't justify buying when they were originally released, but was able to justify buying as "collector's items" after they'd gone out of print.

I am the opposite.. I tend to buy way too many RPG books(30+ shelf feet(10+ meters) of such).. but have yet to buy anything marked up as collectors item.. :) (though few books have been clearance sales of stuff going out)

Gurps 3e was the third most popular RPG of all time, it has around 340+ suppliments and sold millions of copies.

Many, many, many of those suppliments are VERY GOOD. Bloodtypes and Cliffhangers and Cyberpunk to name just a few.

To get the MOST out of them - you need Gurps 3e basic set.

Besides, with the free 4th edition upgrades - the book is still quite playable as is.

:)

I find my older editions invaluable for parsing the historic underpinnings of botched rules and confusing passages.

I'm looking at you, Quirks.
