Default Fridge Brilliance behind infantry restrictions on hovercraft

A light tank has no special accommodations for infantry. They just climb on and hang on.

This doesn't work for most hovercraft because they'd risk getting sucked into the fans. Ergo you have the specially designed GEV-PC with tie down posts or the enclosed cargo area on the hovertruck.

Doesn't explain why infantry can't ride on top of a non-hovering truck though.

Engine power. The truck is already at max cargo capacity, hauling whatever must get there. (If it was empty, why the hell would it drive into a nuclear battlefield?) Battlesuits are heavy. Plus, is the truck ever going where the Infantry want to be?

Probably because the truck was originally envisioned as a deuce-and-a-half with a cloth top. (Standard army "truck".) It wouldn't support their weight.

Even if it was something like a conventional delivery truck or semi, their cargo compartments are designed to keep the rain off things, not to be a stable platform for heavy battlesuits. They'd buckle and break.

Good point. It's not that Battlesuits are heavy, as much as their weight is concentrated. (Or at least more concentrated than your average pallet of goods.)

A cloth-topped truck (or even a conventional cargo truck) hardly seems like it would stop infantry from disembarking any time they feel like it, which trucks and hovertrucks do by 8.06.1.

I welcome empirical data. Until then, I can rationalize 'til the sun goes cold:

Getting one or two squads of battlesuited infantry out of the truck without destroying it is going to take a minute or two. (Using their jump-jets in there would probably set it on fire.) If you would like to play with an optional rule that allows infantry to dismount instantly, but destroys the truck, feel free.

I think this is the dynamic that is occurring when an attack roll is high enough to destroy the truck but not scratch the infantry - the infantry have a few seconds warning from their own sensors and scatter through the sides and top of the truck (Kool-Aid Man style! :) ), not really caring how much of a mess they make of the cargo area in the process.

The truck gets incinerated a few seconds later so it really doesn't matter that the infantry punched several large holes in the walls and set the floor on fire in the process of getting out.

<- looks at subject line

Is this one of those fora where posting a TVTropes link is a perma-ban-worthy trespass? :)
