[RPM] Heaping Pounds of Time
Just tooling around with something perhaps a little silly.
-- In RPM spell modifiers are pretty straightforward. Most of them scale exponentially (Weight starts at 10 and triples with +1, while length related magnitudes follow the speed/range table), and damage scales up linearly (which is probably not a pure linear increase). Duration is the weirdest though. It doesn't go straight exponential (it goes up and down often), and it goes weirdly linear after a month. Basically, it has a jittery x2 or 3 up until a month, where it goes linear, until it hits a year, where it increases to +1 a year. Here are some alternatives: Pounds of Time Read the weight column from the spell modifiers table with pounds as a minute, and tons as 2000 minutes (approximately 1.4 days), and add 1 to the energy column (so momentary is still +0). This may get out of hand fairly quickly, with over a year at +11 and two days at +6. Ounces of Time As before, but read pounds as seconds and tons as 2000 seconds (about 33 minutes) and don't add +1 to the energy column (so the first 10 seconds are free). This gets to about a month at +11, and about 3 hours at +6. Yards of Time Use the Size column of the Speed/Range table, reading yards as minutes (so the first 2 minutes are free). This puts 20 minutes at +6, and 2.5 hours at +11. This is probably too slow. Units of Time Judge on the order of magnitude of the length of the spell. In layman's terms, count the number of digits cost. +0: Seconds +2: Minutes +4: Hours +5: Days +6: Weeks +7: Months +8: Years +9: Decades +10: Centuries +16: As good as forever. This probably grows the fastest and may need to be further doubled. |

Re: [RPM] Heaping Pounds of Time
It is a balancing issue. Since practitioners of RPM do not usually suffer penalties for the number of active rituals, duration needs to be expensive. At +21 for a year (+1 for each additional year), only truly potent practitioners can curse a family for generations. Of course, you can change around things for your settings, like everyone does.
