The energy the plate absorbs is dissipated through the plate and then into the body. Overcoming the strength of the plate will allow a weapon through. With mail the energy is more readily transferred to the body underneath so a lot more energy is needed to actually overcome the strength of the metal. Very little energy is transferred between individual elements so each one's strength needs to be overcome by the blade of the weapon independently. As Novembermike said, plate might still have high edge protection but not way higher than mail.

That was excately my point. And since the DR of plate is higher than mail to begin with, the plate only needs damage above DRx1,5 to be penetrated.
It was just our own variations on LT's Edge Protection rules. Flexible armour is DRx2 for penetration while Rigid is DRx1,5.
