I use both square and round and the built-in base on some. There's not difference as long as you know which way they're facing.

I use spare warhammer and 40K models, placed straight on the carpet/table, and just measure the distances involved. GW sells nice lttle whippy rulers suited for the purpose. 1 inch = 1 yard

I am not willing to re-base my miniatures on hexes.

Any responses will be appreciated.

Thanks.
The only wrinkle I see here is that such a large base will take up the entire square/hex. In GURPS, it is fairly common for two characters to "share" a space. A Reach statistic of "C" on a weapon/attack means that it is used in close combat, when two figures stand in the same hex.

I find myself butting into the same issue, as I use the prepainted plastic minis from the D&D Miniatures game. They work fine in D&D, where characters fully occupy they squares they stand on, but make close combat in GURPS difficult to illustrate.

I suggest using larger hexes/squares to compensate for the size of the minis.

I've ended up resolving the close combat problem by just pulling one or the other mini off the map until the situation gets resolved, but yeah, it's messy. With 1" hexes, you really want minis with 1/2" bases if you're going to squeeze them into the same hex, and at that point you're in a weird scale zone where you don't have as wide a variety of minis... and the minis look TINY to scale with the hexes and scenery anyways.

Having a small chunk of hexgrid on the side with double-scale hexes might be a solution. Leave a marker on the main map to show where the close-combatants are, then move their minis to the double-scale grid.

Easiest way to do all this is to stop using grids at all (hex or otherwise). Just draw your map on some large poster board and use a small ruler to measure. 1 hex is 1" movement and translates to 3' in "reality".
