Opinions on Mongoose's Traveller?
Is there any new ideas to merge into the GURPS 3e classic, for instance?

Re: Opinions on Mongoose's Traveller?
1st edition is not much more than a slightly expanded (skill list mostly) version of CT. Biggest change I can think of is a small section on alternate FTL, but nothing that would be new to GURPS.
2e (not revised as I haven't seen that yet, which mostly seems to just add back ship construction rules based on the ToC): is mostly the same as 1e, with some of the stuff (ship construction, vehicles stuff) being moved to sourcebooks. They added a bunch of isometric maps, and changed the designation of some ships. Biggest change to the rules was adding boon/bane dice which functions more or less like a d6 equivalent to D&D 5e's advantage/disadvantage. At least, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Been a while since I used either of them.

It came out in GURPS 3rd Edition so what you're asking for already exists (unless I am misunderstanding the request).

Re: Opinions on Mongoose's Traveller?
I use some of the campaign supplements with my GURPS 4th edition Traveller game. Currently using the Pirates of Drinax. Fun campaign and pretty easy to convert to whatever version of GURPS or Traveller you use.

Re: Opinions on Mongoose's Traveller?
Rules: it feels like someone's hugely expanded house rules for classic Traveller much more than it feels like a new game. This is good IMO: people who want the classic Traveller rules flavour won't be lost, but there are enough options that you're unlikely to get characters who feel samey.
Background: pretty decent, some good campaigns, and if you're already reasonably fluent in classic Traveller very easy to adapt to other systems.

Setting material is mostly mechanic free (and amusingly for some of the Mongoose 1e third imperium stuff, contains GT timeline info as they're by the same author as the GT version), and so you'd just use the GT mechanics.

Re: Opinions on Mongoose's Traveller?
Our current Traveller game is being ran in the Mongoose 2nd ed rules system but the GM has borrowed some of my GURPS Traveller books, (Nobles and Behind the Claw, so far) because they have better setting write ups.
As a player, I find the GURPS material far better for fleshing out a character background even if the character creation is done in a different system. |
