Default [DF] My Cosmology

Am I overthinking this? But it was sooooo much fun to write... :)

Quote:
Concepts
Aethyric Sea: The first thing that existed. A roiling, boiling sea of raw stuff, it is purposeless, formless and without direction. The proto-Gods arose from this Sea and ordered an infinitesimally small part of it into the Cosmos as we know it today. It is possible that there are other such bubbles of reality in other parts of the Sea, but we know only of this one.

Chaos: Chaos is the Anti-Life. It is not evil per se, it's just that it's a place where life cannot exist any more than a fish can survive in a desert. True Chaos is formless and mutable, but when it enters the Cosmos it is forced into some semblance of order. The order is alien and fundamentally wrong, however, and so warps the minds of anyone who interacts with it.

Cosmos: A bubble of order and form, afloat in the Aethyric Sea. This bubble is the work of all the Gods except the Gods of Chaos. The Cosmos has a definite structure. At the center is the Ordering, an orb of pure ideas. The Ordering is orbited by mini-bubbles - each in and of itself a universe. The closer a bubble gets to the Ordering, the more perfect and stable it becomes. As one gets farther and farther from the Ordering, the worlds get more violent, more diseased and more changeable.

Demons: Demons were originally created as a bulwark against Chaos. They are powerful warriors, able to rip through Elder Things without much difficulty. As time went by, however, they were corrupted from this purpose. They looked at the prosperous inner worlds and became jealous. Today, the hordes of demons originally made to protect the Cosmos is now one of its greatest threats.

Evil: Evil is the desire to dominate, possess and control other beings for the sake of your own good. The ultimate in this is the sacrifice of others to achieve power - power over others or power over the cosmos. Although evil beings can sometimes achieve great things, they are ultimately building their castle on sand - sooner or later one of their underlings will betray them and try to seize power themselves.

Gods: Gods are beings of pure thought. All the Gods on all worlds are reflexes of basic patterns found in the Ordering. This explains why, when some powerful wizards have traveled to other planes, they have invariably found familiar Gods - the King of Beasts, The Lord of Light, etc. The Gods of a specific world is responsible for the running of that world. The farther from the Ordering they are, the more degenerate and corrupt they will be. Farthest out you will find the Gods of Chaos - crawling demented things of immense power.

Good: Good is compassion and genuinely caring about people, including yourself. A good person tries to be considerate, loving and forgiving, although he can be ruthless when he deals with Evil or Chaos. He tries to treat people like ends rather than means and avoids doing things that would be demeaning to the dignity of sentients.

Order: Order is the pattern of rightness, the way "things should be." It emanates from the Ordering at the center of the Cosmos and forces everything it encounters into a set pattern. In most worlds it is represented by the Sun, which brings warmth and life to all things.

The Ordering: The Ordering is the orb of pure divinity that lies at the center of the Cosmos. All the worlds orbit it and get their form and structure from it. No human can come close to the Ordering - that is only for beings of pure thought. The Ordering contains the concepts that form the building blocks of all things - one might say that the Aethyric Sea provides the matter and the Ordering gives it a pattern.

Nothing wrong with a good background or cosmology even in a DF game in my opinion. Do what feels right for you.

All you need now is some fancy names for your concepts.
