Default [Space] Alpha Centauri example stats

A multiple system in GURPS Handbook of Planets

I looked up Alpha Centauri in the Internet Stellar Database and fed the system age, masses, orbital separations, and eccentricities of the components into my GURPS Space 4th edition star system generator.

The spectral classes and luminosities of the stars came out slightly wrong. This is partly because of the approximations used in GURPS Space's spectral class and luminosity model, partly because of uncertainties in astronomical measurements, and partly because the ISDB reports visual magnitudes whereas GURPS Space uses (or ought to use) bolometric magnitudes (which include IR and UV). I didn't worry about the discrepancy in the luminosities, but I manually reduced the mass of component A from 1.1 to 1.09, the mass of component B from 0.85 to 0.84, to get better agreement with the spectral classes.

continued in the next post owing to post length limits

Default Re: [Space] Alpha Centauri example stats

With Personal User Number 1, and System number 1.1, I got this system table for component A:

Default Re: [Space] Alpha Centauri example stats

Since Alpha Centauri worked out so dull in Universe Number One, I thought I'd run off a thousand iterations by varying the personal user number, and see whether anything interesting turned up. Six gave versions of Toliman A with more than one habitable world.
  • Universe 64, 2 habitable planets, and a maximum affinity of 5.
  • Universe 84, 2 habitable planets, and a maximum affinity of 5.
  • Universe 136, 2 habitable moons, and a maximum affinity of 8.
  • Universe 233, 2 habitable planets, and a maximum affinity of 6.
  • Universe 298, 2 habitable planets, and a maximum affinity of 5.
  • Universe 767, 2 habitable planets, and a maximum affinity of 5.

None of those turns out to correspond to a Toliman B with an inhabitable world.

Among those, Universe 484, 507, and 524 also have worlds with affinity above 4 orbiting Toliman B.

I also found 71 universes with Affinity 7 worlds orbiting Alpha Centauri A, 66 with affinity 6 worlds, 49 with solitary affinity 5 worlds, and 34 with solitary affinity 4 worlds.

So now all we have to do is send a probe and see if you were right... :)

Oops! The formulas I wrote to compile those summaries had an error that made them count moons as planets. I'll mend it when I get back from the dentist.

Chances look good!

Out of 10,000 iterations of the Alpha Centauri ternary system, I found 4,110 instances (41.1%) with at least one habitable world in them, a total of 4,786 habitable worlds (4,420 habitable planets and 366 habitable moons). There were even 100 systems with a habitable world orbiting Proxima!

In 36 instances (0.36%) Alpha Centauri has three habitable worlds, and in 31 (0.31%) it has a bonanza planet with Affinity 9.

Mind you, there are some "habitable" worlds I wouldn't be keen to live on.
