[Supers] Laser Vision build
Salutations!
How would you build the kind of laser vision that the likes of Superman and Homelander have? Point efficiency is, of course, appreciated, but rules-legal is more important. I think the benchmark for damage output should be "can reliably one-shot a modern Main Battle Tank". To that end, I would start with Cosmic: Irresistible Attack, +300%, to ignore DR; and one level of Cosmic: Ignores Hardened, +50%, for good measure. A "sweep" in a frontal arc of at least 30° should also be possible. Cone + Selectivity seems like the natural choice here, but since Cone is priced based on the width of the cone at max range, and max range is LOS, so that's complicated. Also, the cost of Cone is completely broken, so... alternatives? Rapid Fire? Increased Range (LOS) is likely, so +40%, or +70% if we add the Jet modifier. The latter would, of course, preclude Rapid Fire, Area Effect and Cone. How would you build it? |

Superman's Heat Vision doesn't have Cosmic. Some tough emenies can resist. You can build your power based on Heat Vision from Supers and then add Armor Divisor (5) or (10). You can also take a look at Ultratech weapons to have some ideas.

The example MBT from High-Tech has HP 176 and DR 1155 on its main armor. Only HT9, though, so if you can deal enough damage to reduce it to negatives, it will likely be disabled. As such, if you do actually use Cosmic (Ignores DR), 50d is about the lowest you can build a power like this with, if "oneshots an MBT" is your benchmark.

So that's 60D and that's only for a breakdown and not an actual "Kill". If you want scrap metal you're going to need 2x that (or more).

If Cosmic (Ignores DR) is on table, how about a weaker attack with high rapid fire instead of a single powerful attack? Between the low Rcl, bonus to hit, relatively short distance (Supes doesn't snipe tanks) and potentially high Acc and ESL, it should hit enough times to disable a tank and Spraying Fire can be used for sweep attacks. Another upside is that tough enemies that can resist it only needs to buy a fairly low amount of cosmic DR.
Edit: If you opt out of Cosmic, the ability to fly should make it easy to flank a tank and aiming for its vital spot gives a wounding modifier that should make it easier to damage it. Tanks also has Fragile (Explosive) and low HT so making them explode (go to -10xHP) is feasible. Edit2: Or just apply mook rules to tanks. Last edited by Sorenant; 06-07-2021 at 12:38 PM. |

Given those parameters I'd go:
IA: Burn 10d (Acc +5 +25%; AP/100 +300%; RoF 20, selective +160%; Variable +5%; Total +500%) [300] That's +4 unaimed (from RoF), and +12 aimed if he lets his eyes glow for a maneuver before firing. At an immobile target who's SM => the range penalty, this automatically hits with either half or all shots (buildings, stationary tanks, etc). It can also spray across multiple targets fairly well. Against a tank HP 176 and DR 1155, it would do (35 avg - DR 12) 23 damage per hit, needing 7 hits to reduce it to 0. That's easily done with a bit a second rev'ing up his glowing eyes before letting loose on it. |
