I imagine a locking mechanism might be used for a new Jedi with little control over their TK, being able to keep that trigger down while the handle is spinning through the air sounds like a LOT of finesse.
That's simple enough with TK in gurps if your "invisible hands" are keeping a hold on the handle, but would not work if you had to "throw" it because then the hands are no longer on it.
Meaning if your TK had range limitations, you could always throw weapons further than you could manipulate them
