While we're giving first thoughts, I thought of the T-800 from Terminator 2. Flatly telling John that his mother is most likely already dead, and that she isn't a mission priority, all the while protecting him.

That might be better treated as Callous and Obsession (John Conner must survive), rather than Callous and Sense of Duty, however.

Actually, Callous and Sense of Duty go together very often -even if straightforward Callousness doesn't imply any Sense of Duty, rather at the contrary.

Because Sense of Duty sometimes implies "it's needed to do this", and "that" what is needed to do can be a hard, painful, or a difficult thing, but "a useful or good thing" nevertheless.

Such attitude can be seen even in some good school teachers: they don't go for sentimentality towards promising students because softening them would produce a distortion of their world view subsequently hampering their capability of facing the hard conditions of adult life where actually a failure can have catastrophic consequences.

People always obliged by vital circumstances to advise and teach towards future conditions of danger and rigor can develop a sort of automatic "Callous" attitude in their day to day behaviour with other people they feel they are responsible of, and even with themselves.

So we can have a kind of "Responsible Callousness" vs. a sort of "Evil (or morally odd) Callousness".

Such lack of sensibility in that "Responsible Callousness" can be abusive or not, healthy or unhealty, though. I think everyone knows examples . . .

Sounds like the archetypical drill sergeant, such as from Full Metal Jacket.
