Curses and unequiping gear

As I understand it, you can equip and unequip equipment whenever you want unless someone is fighting a monster.

When someone gets a curse door card that makes you lose an equipped item, can you unequip the item to not lose it since it's not during a monster fight?

No. The curse would have happened before you can unequip it.

Well, nice try, but no: "whenever you want" does not mean "in the past", and you need to go back in the past and unequip the item before the curse activates, if you want to avoid it :)
