Immediate plans for the Hiawatha
Quote:
The crew assignments assumes that everyone will be doubled up except for the captain and one other [engineer is reasonable, but so are ship's doctor and 2nd in command (XO)], reserving the six staterooms on the upper deck for paying passengers. It is not pracitcal to have the captain and engineer/doc/XO also double up to gain an extra high passage stateroom, because crew quarters are on the mid deck while passenger staterooms are on the upper deck. Having "civilians" roaming the crew areas is a bad idea and will invite accidents, so it is not recommended. However, if you REALLY want the extra ticket sales, I guess you can see what happens....

According to my calculations, hauling the 77-dT load of raw materials the two parsecs to Prometheus will bring in a shipment fee of $800 per dT, or $61,600. There are no passengers available for this trip, since the BTN is just 6 [2.5+4.0-0.5]. I rolled for additional freight on the trade volumes table (2d-10) and got a negative number for the result, so that rounds to zero additional freight.

The next scheduled leg of your journey, from Prometheus to Ninkhur Sagga with 30-dT of medical supplies is a 10-parsec trip, and no additional freight bound for Ninkhur Sagga is available on Prometheus. However, because of the urgent need for the medical supplies, a premium rate is being paid of $2,750 per dT, or $82,500 total freight fee from Prometheus to Ninkhur Sagga.

So, over the course of the enxt 12 weeks, the Hiawatha is scheduled to make at least CR61,600 + CR82,500 = CR144,100. Plus any additional cargo and/or passenger(s) you are able to pick up between Prometheus and Ninkhur Sagga. In fact, your first stop after Prometheus will be 1926 Barnard, and you are already scheduled to take two High Passengers and an additional 2-dT of freight from Prometheus to Barnard, a distance of one jump for a combined fee of CR8,600.

Oh, and for now let's use the cargo/passenger rules in ISW rather than Far Trader. If this proves unworkable we'll re-visit the issue later, but let's give it a shot for awhile, ok?

The Hiawatha has been plying the spaceways and trading around the Sol Subsector. At present the ship is in the Ember system 2227-D, and outbound for Prometheus 2027-B with a hold full of pharmaceutical raw materials (77-DTons) to be made into vaccines. At Prometheus, she is scheduled to take on a 30-DTon load of medical supplies bound for the scientific outpost on Ninkhur Sagga 2222-E. Since there is no return cargo from Ninkhur Sagga, it is hoped that the Hiawatha's crew can put the 57.7-DTons of unused cargo space to good use making hauls to the numerous worlds en route from Prometheus to Ninkhur Sagga. Since it is a 10-parsec route from Prometheus to Ninkhur Sagga, a tidy sum is expected to be cleared for hauling the needed medical supplies. Just a bit more luck and a few good cargoes along the way could turn this from a moderately profitable journey into a veritable goldmine!

On another note, the crew of the Hiawatha notes the presence of the Vilani Far Trader Saeilm Varitsa also outbound in the same general direction as the Hiawatha. You have noticed this same Far Trader before, paralelling the Hiawatha's course. In fact, come to think of it, this would seem to be the second system in a row where you've encountered this vessel. Perhaps it is merely a coincidence. The crew does note that this vessel, the Saeilm Varitsa is quite distinctive because of its speed capabilities, its demonstrated agility, and its unusually streamlined hull that makes it appear like a giant, broad knife slicing through space.

[OOC: Play has now begun, thanks, guys!]

[OOC: Also note that while there is presently some military activity ongoing between the Terran Confederation and the Vilani Imperium, civilian shipping is being carried on as normal, albeit with heightened security procedures.]

Captain Moon keyed the comm, "Ember Traffic, this is TSS Hiawatha, requesting permission to jump. Destination Prometheus, Estimated return is unknown."

"Roger, Hiawatha. Please be aware the Saeilim Varitsa has requested clearance to jump and you will be cleared once they are away."

"Roger, standing by." I've heard that name before... Moon thought to himself. Enlarging the sensor screen, he pulled up the sensors and conducted a quick passive scan of the vessel before it jumped.

Passive Sensor Roll. (3d6=8)

[OOC]I assume they are in broadcasting mode (since it's illegal for them not to be), which is +30.
Additionally, passive scans get:
+16 for Model-1 Sensors
-6 for being passive
+Target's SM
+4 because I've detected them before
-2 (I'll assume I'm scanning them from their rear arc, in which case their knife-shape gives me a -2
- Range Modifier.

My Elec. Op (Sensors) skill is 14, so I'm reasonably confident I got a "detection and identification" (success by 5 or more), which should allow me to pull up the ship's hull class, dtons, and stats for a (factory original) version of the ship, provided someone in the Terran Merchant Marine has encountered a ship of this class before. Additionally, I'd think since it gives me an image, that visible things such as turrets should be detectable. Since it's completely passive, they should have no way of knowing I've done it.[/OOC]

The doctor is watching the scene from the common area behind the cockpit. "Behold the magnificience of Creation ! But say, haven´t we seen this vessel before ? It´s fine lines seem familiar."

"We have, Doctor. It's the Vilani, too." Captain Moon replied. "I ran the sensor scan before it jumped..."

The transmitter cut through. "Hiawatha, this is Ember Traffic. You are cleared outbound for Prometheus. Enjoy your vacation, we'll be keeping hell frozen over here till you return. Squawk 0000."

"Roger, the Ember Traffic. We'll bring some ginseng tea to warm you up next time. It's good for the man. Hiawatha squawking all zeros." He killed the channel. "Set Condition Tango throughout the ship, we've got a week to think about it now, Doctor."

[OOC] The Hiawatha makes ready to jump.[/OOC]

SENSOR DATA

*The sensor data from the Saeilim Varitsa reveal that it is a non-standard configuration of an Empress Marava-Class 200dT Vilani Far Trader. [When I posted "Fat Trader" before, I was mistaken.]

*For stats of a factory original (which this clearly is not), see GT:135.

*Both of the turrets on the ship are equipped with two armaments each, one missile launcher and one sandcaster, but one turret, the ventral one, is currently filled to capacity with cargo, as is the hold. The dorsally-mounted turret appears functional, and is currently manned.

*There are 20 life signatures on board, but 10 of these are identifiable as being in cold-sleep at present.

[OOC] How many G's was it pulling before it jumped?[/OOC]

Captain Moon watched the familiar twisting of space as they dropped into Jump Space. "Stand down, Condition Tango. Commence jump watch rotations."

"Dinner's ready in 2 hours!" Silvester O'Donnell called out from the crew lounge. "Spaghetti Alfredo with... Well, the vacu-seal package says chicken."

The Vilani Far Trader, Saeilim Varitsa, was pulling 1.27 G as it Jumped, but from the dull brick-red glow of her exhaust ports she still had some power to spare.

BTW, the meal tastes quite exceptional for shipboard food, and the alfredo sauce is so good that you wonder where O'Donnell hid the fat Italian woman! But still, some of the "chicken" meat had a mangled look to it, like it had been scraped out of the grille of a grav sled.

OOC: Does anyone have any reason why we should play out some/any of the time spent in JumpSpace? If anyone has any special plans, this would be a good time to clue-in the GM. Otherwise, we might as well gloss over the time spent in JumpSpace. I'm going to assume for the moment that we can skip over it, but let me know if I'm mistaken and I'll edit this post ASAP.

The timer on the JumpDrive Control Panel shows one-half hour remaining before the Hiawatha is unsurreptitiously flung back into normal space in the Prometheus system, 2027, which is a garden world claimed and ruled by the Terran Confederation (of course). It is a tropical garden world with an "affinity score" of 0.9, where 1.0 means identical to terra. There are 850,000 in habitants, but the planet is not known for producing any particularly special resources. Your evidence would seem to indicate, however, that they have the manufacturing capability to turn raw materials into valuable medicines.
