What exactly define a warlock for you ? besides a male practitioner of magic ? Last edited by Celjabba; 09-18-2020 at 08:31 AM. |

Re: Warlock template
You have a patron that grants you spells and special abilities. There are two places I would look for that: Thaumatology, Spirit-Assisted Magic (if you want to use the regular magic system), or Divine Favor (if you want to go the Powers-route).

Re: Warlock template
Since the word "Warlock" (unless you go with the Victorian notion of it meaning "oathbreaker") means "spirit singer," I'd look for a Shaman or Summoner template. Maybe you should blend the two ideas together.

Re: Warlock template
Wouldn't that be covered by the Pact mechanic? Just take the powers you want and assign the Pact Limitation "Duty to Patron."

Re: Warlock template
That latter Norse "spirit singer" etymology is listed as implausible by Wikipedia and Oxford English Dictionary.

Re: Warlock template
That's how it works in Divine Favor. You buy the Patron advantage, limited by Pact, and then you buy the various special abilities as Alternative Abilities to the Patron advantage.

Re: Warlock template
I have to agree. The entomology suggests the Old English word for betrayer or deceiver. A warlock should probably have the Divine power modifier (with an unpleasant associated condition). The Death or Evil power talents from Powers and the Diease, Hell, or Taint power talents from Horror would be appropriate.

Re: Warlock template
"Warlock" is a fascinating word etymologically. Each syllable has various intriguing possible roots. 'War' could be related to concepts of 'truth' (as in 'verify'), 'words' ( as in verbal'), 'protect' (as in 'warden'), and more. 'Lock' can be connected to 'free' or 'absent' (as in 'loose' or 'less'), or 'word' (as in 'logos'), or 'connected' (as in 'lock'), or 'rules' (as in legislation'), and more.
This is why warlocks in my setting are word-mages (and usually love a good pun). |
