Twistor by John G. Cramer uses multiple universes that only interact such that our gravity is the sum of all the universes mass. He is a university physics professor so the book is fairly hard SF.

Energy is not fuel. Uniform heat is energy but by definition not usable to perform work. You must have a heat gradient to use.
Whatever dark energy is, it seems only to effect enormous structures like galaxies and galaxy clusters.
But as technobabble, it's as good as anything.

Just read the newspaper about Dragonfly 44 which consist 99.99% out of dark matter.
