Been there, done that. MG42 teams get most upset when their gunners are shot with arrows. Heat Metal has most unfortunate effects on grenades and ammunition.

Gygax ran a game with Nazis versus an evil high priest and his monsters.

It's described in The Strategic Review # 5 and also, I'm pretty sure, in the first Best of Dragon compilation.

There is a roar of battle from miles away, so clearly your summoners have enemies nearby. Can you make it there and claim sanctuary? And was that a Cultist of the Void you saw groggily getting interrogated in the other room on your way out?
I ran a game in 3e based on the premise that elves had summoned Nazis to champion them against "lesser races". They were stopped by a "Super-Soldier" summoned from another world who sacrificed his life to end the war (but not before his blood serum was copied by human alchemists to create an order of super-knights). Now 1000 years later the war has restarted...

Did you ever read David Brin's "Thor versus Captain America"?

Yes, that, an Elric short story (from a collection of non-Moorcock Elric homages) called, I think, Storm Trooper, and the basic conceit of Yrth were my inspirations. That and elves being pretty natural racial supremacists.

Now I want to run a scenario that involves killing communists during the same era. After all, Stalin's achievements as a mass murderer outdo even Hitler's. Maybe the good guys could be fighting to defend Finland or something.

A Winter War or Continuation War game could kick ass.
