Reign of Steel + Monster Hunters
Imagine dropping characters from Monster Hunters in the world of Reign of Steel. Yeah, there are now metal monsters everywhere, but the old monsters still exist. In fact, who runs VIRUS? Could it be the old masters of the world, wanting their world back?

Re: Reign of Steel + Monster Hunters
If memory serves, in Reign of Steel, many of the cybernetic overlords are killing off as many people as possible. And since many (if not most) monsters consider people to be their food source, I would presume that any master-level monster or any hierarchy of monsters would work to thwart the machines' efforts at culling the monsters' food.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. For instance, vampires would feel very threatened by the extinction of humanity.

Re: Reign of Steel + Monster Hunters
Zelazny had a story like that, The Stainless Steel Leech. The main character, the first robot vampire often talked with the last human vampire (weak because there was no prey..., er humans left). It's only a short story, but a damn good one.

Re: Reign of Steel + Monster Hunters
So, the setting has a good excuse to admit some inhuman templates to the party.
And, you can have a three-way balance, leading to possible politics and intrigue. Is this really a good time to kill the vampire, since he's battling the robots? Just wait it out and then pick up the pieces. A three-way split so the two weakest factions can ally to keep the strongest one from winning by defeating them piecemeal, said weakest two constantly shifting, is a classic computer game design strategy to help ensure perpetual conflict. |

Re: Reign of Steel + Monster Hunters
This is definitely a campaign where you'd want to consider Applied Xenology. Technomagic alone makes it a worthwhile inclusion — though in Reign of Steel, that tends to make the plight of humanity even worse, as the Zone Minds would almost certainly have access to it.
Going all-out, though: if you include aliens, it's possible to also include alien robots — which brings up the question of software compatibility. Should Phasites be able to inhabit robots? Hmm… Or should that just be a Cybercyte thing? Last edited by dataweaver; 08-13-2022 at 11:06 PM. |
