After looking at all the other alternatives, I've been thinking about the various names again. Vril is obviously derived from "viril", which makes me think of Jack Vance's stories. Vis is neat, might be derived from "vision", which ties into mages being able to perceive the hidden world. But I think I might use Ylem as my all-around word - good solid etymological derivation, phonetically non-Latinate, and has that tinge of the otherworld.
