What really brought down Poseidon's curse was Odysseus's encounter with the cyclops Polyphemus, who was one of Poseidon's sons.

But really anything and everything ticked off the Greek gods. Often nothing under the control of the ones cursed. How dare Medusa "allow" herself to be raped by a god, for example.

I thought it was an island of cyclopes. Was every one of them his kids? If so, bummer Odyseus just happened upon the god's favorite.

Well, it was in Aphrodite's own temple, on the altar no less... and it was for that particular sacrilege - doing it on the altar in the temple, where even Aphrodite wouldn't do it - that she punished the participant she could. (Aph couldn't exactly punish Poseidon as easily...)

I can't check the story right now; my copy of the Odyssey is packed away in one of ten boxes.

Poseidon curses Odysseus because he tricks and blinds his son, Polyphemus. Poseidon intervenes because Polyphemus asks him to. I don't think there were any other cyclopses on the island.

There had to be because Odysseus tricks him into saying "No one has blinded me!"
Or is that a later invention? Anyway, Polyphemos did try to eat Odysseus and his companions.

Polyphemus complains of how he's been injured to his fellow cyclopes.
