What's the difference between an open passageway and a normal door? They both have one movement cost.

One's a door, and one's an open passageway. Depending on any given card, that might make a difference. For example, a Monster might have a special rule that says it is not able to move through a regular door.

But there is no difference as far as the basic ruleset is concerned, then.

They're different. Just because they have the same movement doesn't make them the same. Under the basic rules, one is a door, one is an open passageway, and how Monsters and other cards might interact with them is what makes them different.
