If someone helps you in combat do they also gain level? I know if they lose they turn over a heart.

Elves get a level for each monster they help kill and anyone will get a level for each Fearsome monster they help kill (In this case, they are getting one of the two levels for the Fearsome monster, the combat owner only gets the other level in this case).

These rules are listed in the Leveling Up section of p15 of the rules.
