There'd be a one-shot item called "A Deal With the Mafia," or something to that effect, whereby you play the card to immediately go up two levels, and put yourself "in debt" for 2000 gold. The debt increases by 200 gold each turn (your turn), including the turn on which you play the card. You keep the card in front of you, rotated upside-down, as a reminder.

You cannot win the game while in debt– you stop gaining levels at level 9 (18 for Epic). You can still gain treasures, etc., but you don't gain any levels for winning combat.

If your debt reaches 5000 gold, the Mafia kills you at the start of your turn. If you die while in debt, whether it be because the Mafia kills you, or as Bad Stuff, the Mafia loots your corpse (discard all the stuff) and nobody else gets anything. The debt is not transferred to your new character.
this sounds like a good idea although I can't see anyone in our group using that even if they did agree to play that house rule

My House Rule:

When Playing EPIC Munchkin, when you reach Epic status, all monsters get an Auto +10 to there level,

why? Because it makes the game more challenging, and super fun.

My groups main house rules are these:

1. If you are tied for lowest, Charity is a gray area. You may discard or give to charity at your discretion (though if you do give to charity, the cards must still be divided as evenly as possible)

2. Since we play with mixed old and new sets (I haven't bought GUAL yet), whatever rules for your class/race are on your card are the ones you use for your character. Yes, that means some wizard cards are more useful than others.

Mines pretty simple. The rules say youget to level 10without killing a monster, we say it's level 9 or 10. It makes it a little harder to get the final two levels.

See, I only possesed the original rules that came with the Fantasy base set however long ago (it's been a while). We've had many disagreements on the rules concerning one-shot items. We've been under the impression that such items had to be in hand...hence the option of a bag of stuff would be appealing, clearing you hand for monsters and curses and such...

Heh, in which case, I'm going to apologize for the confusion! (but not really...meh heh heh...)

Well, I'm going to be honest here: The rules have always said that (I have two copies of the game from its first printing hiding in storage somewhere). I just want to make it clear that this is not a new thing or only now being clarified in the latest printing.

I gotta agree with this. I have a old copy of rules and it was always clear that you could put one shots down on the table.

This amuses me, then, because about five of us have read and re-read the old rules included with the game in regards to this issue.

I believe you, but it is funny that five of us didn't reach that conclusion...ah well...

Cheers for setting that straight!!!

Importing an idea from Munchkin Quest : when reaching level 10, the player has not yet won the game.
He goes on playing, and the next monster he encounters is automatically level 20 - and keeps all origin characteristics.
No special card can avoid the combat.
Otherwise, the combat is done the same but, if the Munchkin loses, he goes down one level (to 9) in addition to any possible usual bad stuff.

This can prevent keeping a low level monster in one's hand and attacking it while looking for trouble.
