Game design is newer, but I got my Space Exploration merit badge in the mid-90s.

Okay, we are in the Future.

This maniac on YouTube has built a 100-watt handheld laser pistol that can ignite wood and burn holes in glass and metal. He built this in his private workshop.

So this demonstration means the sci-fi laser rifles and pistols of the 1960's and 70's fiction are possible NOW if one were to use actual high-end materials and resources. And might be available on the open market in five to ten years. (Assuming they aren't outlawed.)
