oh, you're expecting a soulless clone of Peter?

Maybe because I have mentioned that I was... I was 6 feet tall and 200 pounds by Peters age. But Peter is average height and low average weight, contrasting with his ginormous companion, who I envision as big even for his breed.
That might be it.

He can ask Dr. Goslin... or was another of them that seemed to form more of a liking to Peter?

"Yes sir, I am sir. Unless the situation changes somehow, I think to do the most good, I have to maintain a position that all sides can tolerate, sir."

Dr. Goslin is the nuclear scientist who has given you the most trouble. Dr. Cauldwell (who actually works in medicine) has thought about things in terms of lives he can save via medicine, Mr. Patterson knows the most people and seems to want to move big political levers (He's the mayor back home), and Mr. Cardin is the most interested in making money off of it and the logistics of the whole operation.

General Thurmond gives Peter some documents to sign so that he can get to work helping them find portals.

IF he can, Peter will talk about this with Mr. Patterson and Mr. Cardin and see if he has a volunteer. He wants to be able to access the money, and donate 20% off the top to the Boy Scouts of America, and set up a clause that if he doesn't touch the account for a year, it all goes to the Scouts.

He reads them and if he does not find them objectionable he signs them simply "Peter."

r. Cardin is happy to handle Peter's accounts... "That's hardly any trouble at all! Its the least I can do. Do you want..." And he launches into a bunch of options for keeping the money, before realizing Peter isn't too worried about the whole thing.

The contract contains the lines that Peter won't try and run through the portals without permission, and that he will obey the orders of the commanding officer while looking for portals.

Peter adds a few lines before signing.

He wants them to agree to let Goliath go unmuzzled, and to affirm that he will be able to continue his duties as Emissary, which requires them allowing him periodic passage back to the clockwork world.

Next to the line indicating he agrees to follow orders, he adds "That I do not find morally objectionable."

General Thurmond looks over them.

Thurmound: "You're a civilian contractor. That goes without saying. You can say it though. Just be prepared to defend your choice in court. If you're not trying to invoke it for trivial matters, you'll be fine. I'll sign it"

Peter is amused at the notion of an imprisoned minor being forced to defend himself in court over a contract demanding obedience signed under duress by the military.

"Can't blame a guy for trying, sir!" Peter proclaims.

Assuming Peter accepted taking off the Emmissary bit, General Thurmond will send him out to go portal hunting that day.

There are a LOT of portals. If he goes quickly, he can probably find 10 on the first day of being driven around.

Peter accepts and goes portal hunting. He will open or close them as ordered. He will try and get a look through them and see if he can see where they are going.

He brings some of his textbooks and tries to catch up with his schoolwork while on the road, but he will take breaks from it to try and get the soldiers to teach him to drive...
