Default Dungeon Fantasy on the cheap...

...or how to start your Dungeon Fantasy campaign at "First Level"

I've had this article kicking around for a long time. Originally I'd thought about submitting it to Pyramid, but never quite polished it the way I'd have liked to. Then I completely forgot about it for... oh... a year. I finally decided to just post it to my website and be done with it:

Dungeon Fantasy on the Cheap

PDF Printable Version of the Article

This article describes how to scale back the various character templates from Dungeon Fantasy to 100, 150 and 200 points. These can be useful for starting a lower point DF game or for adding Racial Templates or Mixed Profession templates into a 250 point game. Included are all the templates from Dungeon Fantasy 1: Adventurers, DF 3: The Next Level, DF 4: Sages, DF 9: Summoners, DF 10: Taverns, and DF 11: Ninja.

Included is a GCA Data File I wrote up with the scaled back templates.

Nice! I tried something similar over spring break and the Players responded well.

Very nice,

I like the idea of a scalable DF.

I've previously done this for 200pts and currently run a campaign with 200pt characters. Works fine.
Thanks

I came up with a quick-and-dirty thumbnail to scale back to 200 points, using the same basic idea (Oh, look at all these attribute points...) - it's good to see others with the same idea, and more time to refine the concept :D

Have you had a chance to try this out in play yet?

I'm working on getting a campaign started this summer, and I was toying with 200 points + 50 points for a racial package, but so far I've settled on 250+50 because I'm lazy. But now you've done my work for me...

I've not read it all, but this is a great article. And very useful! I want to this officially published in some Pyramid . . . Thank you!

EDIT: after reading it, I think it's a very good work. And by almost exclusively reducing the attributes in the templates, and not the skills nor other traits (almost), you're keeping the niches pretty well, and the usability of Dungeon Fantasy 2 concerning skills and special uses.

I like this set up of lower powered DF templates because it gives a more old school feel for dungeon delving where you start out as a nobody and then become a hero.

What about rolling skills back, too? A 1st level old school D&D Fighter has a 50% of missing a unarmed unarmored opponent after six full seconds of attacking him. First level wizards had 1 spell IIRC. If you really want that old school feel, you might want 25-100 point characters.

"Miss chance" in GURPS includes the opponents active defense rolls (replacing D&D AC numbers) - so you probably don't want fighter characters with skill 10 ;)

As a side note, you COULD create a THAC0 matrix for GURPS to reduce to-hit to a single die roll taking into account the victims defense and defense options. You'd probably need %ile dice to roll on it though, so I'm not sure it would simplify anything.

Yeah but 1st edition AC 10 in GURPS is just an unmodified average person's dodge of 8, so to get a 50% think of one hit after 6 Attack Maneuvers, you'd need a pretty low skill I think. I suck at probability so I'm not sure how low that actually is.

I did something like that. Hold for the link.

Edit: Here it is

PDF at the top of the post.
