Default Spending XPs to cast spells?

One common mechanic not used in TFT is spending XPs for spellcasting.

Like say Quick Heal(T): Target heals one hit. The caster loses 5 fatigue and 5 XP.

I'd be concerned this would change the game from being excitingly poised ("Will we win or will the castle be overrun by vengeance maggots?") and replace it with an economic question ("Are we going to have to burn XPs to keep going or can we keep the XPs and go up an attribute?") The second question strikes me as much less exciting and interesting than the first.

TFT already has a limited form of this that requires a couple orders of magnitude more XP: Lesser Wish for 500XP.

Or Revival which can cost the target thousands of XP.

I agree that the Lesser Wish economy is the best way to implement this. It is discretized enough that you don't have to constantly think about it, but it presents players with a free choice to use their XP as a resource to enable occasional magical and quasi-magical feats.
