I'm oblivious and used to eat before looking back when I was a young pig. I know the colors of mold by taste. The whiter the stuff, the milder tasting and dryer the mold. Wet and black is the worst tasting by far, I've found.

The only time I hurled was from mayo where I misread the expiration year. I thought the 6 was an 8 and figured only a little off at the time. I had recently gone back to normal foods after a medically necessary super strict diet, so everything tasted weird.

I think all of those are horrifically bitter. The character may hurl just out of taste revulsion if not technical poison. Until a few years ago the mere idea of raw celery would make me gag. Forcing me to eat it despite its normal food safety would have made me vomit.

They might use something more dangerous than vinegar for their equivalent of pickling.

Regarding the bitterness: we dislike the taste because of the danger.
This proposed character will taste these as regular nuts, herbs, and berries.

Many acids are more toxic than corrosive. I believe that if you've suffered moderate burns from hydrofluoric acid, you've already taken in a lethal dose.

Indiscriminate eating of random plants. Most of them are mildly poisonous. Few will kill you. many will make you sick. At least without the +8.

HF is an unusual case -- while there are plenty of toxic substances that are technically acids (e.g. hydrogen cyanide), most of them won't cause burns at all, and major acids that are likely to burn you (sulfuric, hydrochloric, nitric) are primarily dangerous for their corrosiveness.

Okay, I should have written, "some acids..." Or maybe even just one acid?

I was trying to think of something toxic that could be used to pickle.

A quick search shows that pickling, by definition, is either in vinegar specifically, or by means of fermentation which leads to lactic acid.

There is also a form of it in metallurgy that using strong acids such as sulfuric or hydrochloric. But immunity to poisons wouldn't protect you from such; they inflict actual corrosion damage to hit points, and no immunity exists for that.

Colorful mushrooms are good for showing off.
If resistant to metabolic hazards instead of poison,
wearing benzene as a perfume ?
And of course, lead-based paints for plates...

Yeah, that's the sort of examples I'm looking for, but there seem to be few of those. Probably because RPG poisons are largely chosen based on what the adventurers would consider efficient ones.

The other factor is, of course, that examples that have reason to be consumed are the best. "Detoxifying it was too much of a hassle" and "But it tastes good!" are the reasons I came up with so far, but perhaps there are others.

(Note: the 'showing off' is more of an OOC thing than IC. I.e. I'm looking for things that would be casual for the culture but impressive/scary for outsiders.)
