Swashbuckling more
Has anyone wrote matirial for a swashbucklers campaign or tried to up-date bits of it to 4e?
What about additional martial arts styles? I noticed that there was no cutlass system in 3e Swashbucklers which seemed odd.

Re: Swashbuckling more
Unfortunately, I don't think we know much about historical cutlass systems used by sailors (it seems to have been generally up to each ship to decide what sort of training to provide). But a Swashbucklers or Pirates campaign would want to invent one! I've never played in that genre myself.

Re: Swashbuckling more
The Fencing Styles in Martial Arts would be no brainers to use in a Swashbuckling game. Hot Spots: Ren Florence, also good. GURPS Fantasy has some stats for some ships including Pirate Ship and Spanish Galleon. Most of what I'd take from the 3e book would be fluff and just use the crunch already supplied in 4e.

If we're lucky, we'll get a blurb or two in Low-Tech when it finally comes out. Otherwise, I'd tailor it to the feel of the game I intended.

Re: Swashbuckling more
Not a cutlass style, but definitely present during the age of sail:
Pistol Dueling 4 This was a common way for gentlemen to settle their differences for years. It would be disgraceful to run or try to dodge, so the duelist was always firing at a stationary target, thus Guns Sport (Pistol), rather than Guns (Pistol). Usually each duelist would get one shot from a predetermined distance. The more experienced duelist would usually let his opponent fire a rushed inaccurate shot, so that he can take careful aim. Skills: Pistol Sport, Games (Dueling), Savoir-Fare (High Society) Techniques: Targeted Attack (Pistol Shot/Vitals) Cinematic Skills: Zen Marksmanship Cinematic Techniques: None Perks: Schtick (Doesn’t Flinch when shot at, +1 to any subsequent Intimidation rolls), Optional Abilities: Fearless, Unfazeable

Re: Swashbuckling more
That's a good style write up aesir, I especially like the perk. Even if the timing on it is a little off for Swashbuckling.

Is the OP thinking of something set in Europe or the Caribbean between 1600 and 1750? Still, swashbuckling isn't [IMO] really about a specific era in history, so much as a style of play/storytelling. You could run a perfectly good swashbucklers game set in the medieval Indian Ocean, or 19th century California, or Yrth, etc. |
