Default tokens - gold - other question

Sorry if these are a dumb questions...

On the instructions says, each player will receive 10 tokens (buttons, chips, whatever)
After that initial part there is no reference at all to such tokens and what is their use. What do those token represent ? If it's gold... how much ?

Your items can be sold for a level upgrade ? or you receive gold ?

The "tokens" are just a cheap and easy way to keep track of your levels. If you gain a level you get a token and if you lose a level you lose a token. You can replace tokens with anything that can easily and visually keep track of one through ten such as a level counter, dice, or even a pen and paper.

There is no gold in this game to gain or keep track of. The gold value on the cards is there simply so you can sale 1,000 gold or more worth at the same time to gain a level.
