Believe it or not I have already done the Ark-of-the-Covenant in Axum in a Cliffhangers-style adventure.

It is a good suggestion, though!

I believe Tarzan found at least 3 lost Roman colonies.

So have I. In my version, the monastery had two arks; an impressive-looking medieval forgery and the True Ark hidden in a secret chamber. Guess which one we let the Italians take.

Jeff
Aurel Stein actually did find traces of Macedonian colonists in Central Asia. I doubt he found a Secret Man Was Not Meant To Know. If he did The World Was Not Ready.

Other character types --

Smuggler
Bedouin

Also dangerous competition from Afrikaaners, Germans, French Foreign Legionnnaires, and Muslim preachers from the North coast.

Sometimes the same thing: Bedouin often smuggle.

Default Belgian Congo & atrocities --

Alas, the atrocities did not end with the end of the Congo Free State. See "King Leopold's Ghost" for more information.

If you want to have exploitation, savage punishments, arbitrary and capricious European officials, the 20's will work just fine.

Alas.

Anyone know any ancient Egyptian? What would "Fountain of Life" be as a place-name?

Best I could do would be:

Mw'nh'nis (Mwanyonis)

There is a rumour that the Ark ended up somewhere in the former Rhodesia, somewhere near Great Zimbabwe ... and apparently there's a tribe down there with y-chromosome DNA characteristic of the "Aaronic" Israelite bloodline. Apparently a better genetic match than the Beta Israel in Ethiopiea who are meant to be descended from Menelik's retinue.

You could also nick the white gorillas from Crichton's Congo or the part human-part gorilla people from H.P. Lovecraft's Arthur Jermyn story.

You could even do zombie kingdoms - the Caribbean had to get its Muti from somewhere...
