Oops, I misremembered the term.

Right, it's worse than steerage. Then you're at least a passenger.

Okay, well, Xi'an cannot break his word and he signed and employee agreement, so he will sit in his cabin. Hope they have good insurance.

They never made it out of the system, so it's a local matter, not an imperial one anyway, right?

You recall one of your mentor's saying that some orders are expected to be disobeyed. The key is in knowing which ones.

Actually, insurance is why the order is given. If an employee with no training attempts to help and causes a problem or hurts a passenger (accidentally), there is increased liability. So these people are ordered to stay out of it; if they disobey orders there is less liability.

I presume they would not have employed him without documenting the acknowledgment of the agreement with the standing orders and whatnot, and pirates and collisions are known hazards.

Breaking an agreement is going back on your word.

Doing so would make him a liar, ruin his honor, and make him unworthy of his order, wouldn't it? If they required him agree to it, he would have to adhere to it.

Pretty dumb of them to look at his resume and stick him in a kitchen or whatever and order him to his room in an emergency, but in classic 'annoying Paladin' fashion, our effective status 4 hero is bound by his word and his status -2 job's orders unless he gets new orders to the contrary...

Unless... What are the laws regarding employment at will? Can he resign without notice by his contract? That would free him from his employee agreements and let him leave his bunk.

It is a nice loophole to protecting the corporation at the cost of the employee compromising their agreement if they decide to help anyway, and absolves them of responsibility for backing that good samaritan up. Reap what you sow I guess.

BTW -- He DID leave a message with Security with the statement, but without the steerage reference. So maybe they'll get back to him.

A one-page agreement.

You have three oaths: Justice, Balance, and Truth. Helping people is the job of a Knight Errant.

Part of errant is learning how your oaths interact with the real world. Truth is important; letting innocent people die is a totally different thing.

They read his resume? All you gave them was a three-page form without any employment information. They had around 40 low-level jobs that required little training. They fill the jobs.

The 3I doesn't care about employment, for the most part. And 3I laws are usually written so they can/must be interpreted. Their rules of war is less than one page. I don't think that they have rules for employment.

On a passenger liner, insurance is a necessity. If rules work most of the time, they are good enough. But they'd rather not have passengers hurt.

If anybody is there to answer it.

I'll run towards the engine room. See how I can help.
OK. From what you've heard, pirates go for engineering and the bridge.

They weren't hiring for engineering people, just for cleaners and such. Once you get to a good system, you can find an engineering job.

So Scott is headed to engineering, and Xi'an is scanning the comms, available media and/or onboard computers for any updates to the situation.

Do I have reason to suspect pirates?

Even so, Scott isn't exactly "unarmed". He has buttons on his uniform, right? are they metal? If not I need to look for some small hard objects.

makes sense.

About 250 passengers, and almost 100 crew.

You run towards engineering and a little kid, no, an alien turns and points a rod at you. Then he lowers it, but you know that he believes it's a weapon.

He says, "We must get to the central park." (It's on the way to engineering.)

How much time has passed since the collision?

Getting the myday, with an external view, was pretty suspicious.

Other then alarms, there have been no general shipwide announcements to passengers that we might overhear, and despite making sure we are issued with comms, have made no announcements to the crew.

What's the distance between us?

What kind of clothing is he wearing?

Do I recognize the kind of alien?

How many other people are in the hall?

What can I see about the rod? does it have a power source? Buttons? is it metal or plastic or something else?
