It certainly won't let you traverse the world. Sand in the ocean is only found close to the shore (which makes sense, given that the shore is where it is produced- farther out, the bottom is mud, rock, and various exciting oozes), and doesn't run uninterrupted even in that zone. Its utility in deserts (as you may already know) will also be less than pop-culture would suggest. Even in deserts like the Sahara that are famous for their dunes, areas of sand form a minority compared to areas of bare rock (and, crucially, the areas of sand tend to be "islands" rather than contiguous bands across the desert).

It's an undeniably useful power, granted- in a good scenario, you can monitor hundreds of square miles at once, and immediately emerge anywhere therein, to say nothing of the fun you can have impersonating a djinni-, but it won't replace teleportation, or even a good camel.

Permeation with sand won't even do much for you in most deserts; while there are areas with seas of sand, an awful lot of deserts are rock, or are puddles of sand separated by rock.

As long as your GM knows that...

Yeah, I grew up in a "desert". There are lots of different kinds. And yet everyone immediately jumps to the sea of sand.

If you want a earth-crossing meld, you're probably stuck with "sediment", or even "earth", meaning dirt, sand, stone, and so forth. "Water" can be interesting though.
