Col. Bob Howard was the most decorated soldier of the post-WWII era. To really get a handle on his achievements you probably need to read John Plaster's books on SOG, but the wikipedia article does a decent job:

Here's a link for background info on Delf "Jelly" Bryce.

Bryce was an exceptional fastdraw artist. He actually survived multiple gunfights where he had to draw against opponents that already had their guns out and was able to draw and kill them before they could get a shot off. Bryce was pretty much a real world Dirty Harry, at least in terms of his gunfighting exploits.

Surprised no one has mentioned any of the old west shootists. John Wesley Harding has my vote of probably being the best of them.
